The History
Constellation Work was developed by a German psychoanalyst named Bert Hellinger.
Bert says, “When there has been a trauma or someone in the family system has been excluded, forgotten, cast out, or suffered a difficult fate, someone of the following generations unconsciously and invariably will step in and bring the lost member’s destiny back through living it out in this lifetime affecting us in ways in which we have no understanding. It happens out of a deep but hidden loyalty that will not allow anyone of a family system being denied the right to belong. It is a love so deep that the family member may unconsciously choose to die, rather than ‘betray’ the family bond.”
Bert Hellinger is known as one of the most influential and effective family therapists in the world today. He is a former priest and was a missionary to the Zulu in South Africa for 16 years. As well, he is an educator, psychoanalyst, group dynamic expert and family therapist. The development of Family Constellation Work evolved through his work with post-war families in Europe and through the study of the major forms of psychotherapy, including Psychoanalysis, Gestalt Therapy, Primal Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Family Systems Therapy. He has written more than 83 books, published in 30 languages. Bert, along with his wife Sophie, lecture and offer training and seminars through the Hellinger scienciaⓇ school in Germany.
